One of the new generation of modern guitar masters interviews an OG. Fender presents Nick Reinhart interviewing and jamming with Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth fame, as well as a performance by Moore’s group. As a bonus, I include the EarthQuaker Devices series Show us Your Junk, featuring Reinhart wittily describing his massive collection of sound generating gear. PS: If you haven’t watched the HBO Max series, Irma Vep, it is worth it just for Moore’s creative score.

Nick Reinhart: Willie Wonka of Guitar
If there is a young guitarist you captures the Guitar Moderne ethos perfectly it is Nick Reinhart. In his work with Tera Melos and with Nels Cline in Big Walnuts Yonder he exhibits a spirit of musical experimentation and pushes the guitar’s sonic potential as far as it will go, with virtuosic technique and wry humor. Premier Guitar caught up with him when he came through Nashville and did an extensive rig rundown, revealing his fan bestowed nickname (no pun intended). Reinhart also reveals one of his sonic secrets. Spoiler alert: Superglue.
Guitar Moderne Top Records of 2017
There were many terrific records in 2017. In another year, Charlie Rauh’s Viriditas, Dan Phelps’ Arc, and Rights by Manuel Troller’s band Schnellertollermeier might have fit on my “Best of…” list. But this year saw so many releases by modern guitar superstars that I just have to recommend reserving some money to also pick up their worthy efforts.
This list is mine; feel free to list yours in the comment section.
Summer NAMM 2014
The new Nashville Music City Center hosted Summer NAMM for the second year in a row. Though the summer version has become a very guitar-centric show, it normally skews pretty traditional. This year offered a surprise, though. In amongst the usual din of metal, blues, bluegrass, jazz, and country licks, a duo took the stage at the sizable Earthquaker Devices booth to perform a set of ultra-modern musical noise. Guitarist Nick Reinhart (Tera Melos) and bassist Jonathan Hischke demonstrated the unusual, cutting-edge tones that can be extracted from this company’s product line. Look for an upcoming interview with Reinhart. In the meantime, here are some things from the show that might be of interest to modern guitarists.
