Great new releases keep on coming and there are also some older ones that fell through the cracks here,

Record Picks is a periodic offering from Guitar Moderne: a listing of recordings brought to my attention that I feel are momentous enough to bring to yours. These are not reviews. Feel free to submit recordings, but they must be purchasable worldwide, reflective of modern guitar (again subjective, but no blues, classic rock, be-bop, country, etc.), and on a par with the ones below to rate a mention. Many of these are available from DMG in NYC. If you have sent me a recording, feel free to remind me.

Another Side of Eivind Aarset

Many Guitar Moderne readers are aware of Eivind Aarset‘s contributions to the music of Jon Hassell, Nils Petter Molvær, Andy Shepard, Dhafer Youssef, and Michel Benita’s Ethics, as well as his own his own body of brilliant work. Fewer have heard his earlier playing in the band Ab und Zu, in which he was joined by his wife Anne-Marie Giørtz. There he displayed the pop proficiency and versatility that has made him a valued session player. Below is just one example of their multi-style output.

Form the sound of this teaser video for her upcoming release Capital Punishment for Cars [Grappa Records], Ms. Giørtz’s music has evolved in an interesting direction, displaying a less familiar side to her husband’s playing as well.

Spotlight: Daniele Principato

In some ways, Daniele Principato is emblematic of the new breed of experimental guitarists. As The Auralab, he a prominent presence on YouTube, where he posts his process, as well as full shows. He has no website but is on Facebook. He is out of the Stian Westerhus school of often playing pedals as much as notes. He is also refreshingly forthright, as well as interesting, in his description of his relationship to music.

Nick Reinhart and Earthquaker Devices

Nels Cline, Adrian Belew, David Torn, Eivind Aarset, Fred Frith—These superstars of modern guitar have been with us for decades and are all currently making vibrant, forward thinking music. Oz Noy and Stian Westerhus are relative youngsters in this category, still, we all might sometimes wonder where the next generation of players on this level will come from. I have featured many talented young players in Guitar Moderne, but Nick Reinhart is one of the few who embodies the rare combination of virtuoso technique on both guitar and effects required for superstar status in the world of modern guitar. His ability to spontaneously turn noise into music continues to astound me. Here he is wreaking great sounds out of a random sample of Earthquaker pedals and what are probably an unfamiliar amp and guitar.
