Rippin’ Rypdal

On Terje Rypdal’s 73th birthday, I wanted to let you know about an amazing 6 CD boxed set from 10 years ago. I consider myself a big fan of the Norwegian guitarist, yet until recently was unaware of this collection of live trio performances (with the occasional guest), Very Much Alive. Perhaps because it was released as a Paolo Vinaccia project on Jazzland , rather than ECM.

Vinaccia has been the drummer in Rypdal’s trio for a decade and is to be thanked for releasing these stellar shows. I was lucky enough to see Rypdal live in New York City eight years ago, but many in the Western hemisphere have never heard him live.

There is plenty of YouTube Footage, but there are performances on here unlike any I have heard, some more rock-like, some more avant-garde, all fantastic. It is available on Spotify, so check it out and, if you like it, buy the boxed set to support the artists and label.

  1. It never ceases to amaze me what a well spring of great guitar talent emerged from the ECM catalog. Metheney , Rypdal, Abercrombie, Tibbets, Towner, Torn, Frissell , Scofield, Goodrick, and that’s just for starters. Thanks for this information about one of my favs.
