Guitar Moderne Record Picks XV

Some Xmas gifts for the modern guitarist in your life.

Jannis Anastasakis & Thodoris Rellos Horselover Fat [JannisAnastasakis.com]

Thodoris Rellos (bari-sax, flute, voice) and Jam Pedals maker Jannis Anastasakis (el.guitar, cl.guitar, effects, live-sampling, analog synth bass) present improvisations and experimentations referring to and drawing inspiration from American sic-fi writer Philip K. Dick’s short-stories.

Sun Tiger (Sean Moran, Hank Roberts, Vinnie Sperrazza) Sun Tiger [Skirl Records]

Former Frisell associate, cellist Hank Roberts joins guitarist Sean Moran, and drummer Sperrazza for a set alternately elegiac and explosive.

The Lie Detectors The Lie Detectors -Part III: Secret Unit [Chant Records]

This duo of Eyal Maoz and drummer Asaf Sirkis covers an extraordinary amount of sonic, musical, and emotional ground for only two instruments.

Dustin Carlson Air Ceremony [Out Of Your Head Records]

Carlson offers a new, angular voice on this septet record as he ranges from classical-style solo pieces to noisy and textural group rave ups.

Two by Wendy Eisenberg

With her chops and schooling, courtesy of the New England Conservatory, Wendy Eisenberg could have gone in any direction she chose, from be-bop to heavy metal. It is our good fortune that she picked the world of the avant garde and has released two instrumental records featuring divergent facets of that world. Be sure to check out her some of her unique singer/songwriter stuff as well.

Wendy Eisenberg The Mechanic Unconcious [TZADIK]

Here she joins Ches Smith and Trevor Dunn for a turbulant, noisy, yet controlled, electric outing, holding her own with these two giants of the modern improv world.

Wendy Eisenberg Its Shape Is Your Touch [VDSQ]

These acoustic improvisations are rife with internal logic and emotion, occasionally recalling Derek Bailey but largely leaning more lyrical.

Luca Formenti Scintilla [Audiobulb Records]

Formenti’s evocative minimalism on guitar and piano sounds like cues from a movie I would like to see.

Record Picks is a periodic offering from Guitar Moderne: a listing of recordings brought to my attention that I feel are worthy of being brought to yours. These are not reviews. Feel free to submit recordings, but they must be purchasable worldwide, reflective of modern guitar (subjective to be sure, but no blues, classic rock, be-bop, country, etc.) and on a par with the ones above to rate a mention. Many of these are available from DMG in NYC. If you have already sent me a recording, feel free to remind me.
