Guitar Moderne Record Picks VIII

A pair of great new recordings featuring Bill Frisell have dropped.

Bill Frisell & Thomas Morgan Small Town [ECM] pairs the pioneer with the young bass phenom, Morgan, in a live duo set that recalls the classic Jim Hall/Ron Carter duet records. (Release date May 26th)

Cuong Vu 4TET Performs the Music of Michael Gibbs Ballet [RareNoise] finds Frisell joining the modern trumpeter VU, Luke Bergman on bass, and Ted Poor on drums in a live tribute to the music of composer Gibbs, who was something of a hero to the guitarist.

Dave Holland, Chris Potter, Lionel Loueke, Eric Harland Aziza [Dare2 Records] This jazz supergroup features Loueke’s ancient/future guitar playing, based on millenia-old rhythms but employing tomorrow’s technology, combining Kemper Profiles, Whammy and ring modulator effects.

On Fred Frith Trio Another Day In Fucking Paradise [Intakt Records], Frith is joined by Jason Hoopes on bass and Jordan Glenn on drums for a project that allows the master guitarist to range from ambient to noisy and everything in between—even some notes and melodies.

Harvey Mandel Snake Attack [Rockbeat Records] Harvey “Snake” Mandel’s odyssey began with Charlie Musselwhite, continuing with Canned Heat and the Rolling Stones. He has also made a raft of solo records ripe for sampling. Here he programs beats, pulls cool sounds out of a Roland VG-99, and employs the backwards guitar and tapping techniques he pioneered to make some modern music. One of the very few Sixties artists still evolving in the new Millennium.

Record Picks is a periodic offering from Guitar Moderne: a listing of recordings brought to my attention that I feel are momentous enough to bring to yours. These are not reviews. Feel free to submit recordings, but they must be purchasable worldwide, reflective of modern guitar (again subjective, but no blues, classic rock, be-bop, country, etc.) and on a par with the ones above to rate a mention. Many of these are available from DMG in NYC. If you have sent me a recording, feel free to remind me.
