Here are some sites of interest to modern guitarists:

Barry Cleveland : Former Guitar Player Magazine editor features his own forward thinking music as well as in depth reviews with others.

Prepared Guitar : Not just prepared guitar, or even just guitar, but plenty of interesting posts on modern guitarists like David Tronzo, Noël Akchoté, Bill Frisell, etc.

tonefiend.com: Former Guitar Player editor, PJ Harvey sideman, and bon vivant, Joe Gore’s site on all things guitar, from a modern perspective.

Create Digital Music: Peter Kirn’s terrific resource for new hardware, software, concepts, and issues pertaining to those of us who make electronic music.

Downtown Music Gallery: THE record store for experimental, prog, avant, etc. Brick and Mortar in Chinatown but largely mail order. For when you just have to have an actual CD.For some reason I can’t get it to link so here is the web address:www.downtownmusicgallery.com/Main/index.htm

300 Acting Spaces: Out of Norway, with its overlarge share of modern guitarists comes a cool website with live streaming shows, as well as archived video of electronic guitar performances.

Pro Guitar Shop in Portland has the coolest gear on the planet. If you have ever heard of a pedal they probably have a professional video demo of it.

Drowning In Guitars Lots of stuff about oddball guitars, amps, and fuzz, fuzz, and more fuzz.

Weirdguitarlessons.com  Guitarist Shawn Persinger offers video lessons with downloadable sheet music. He covers off-the-beaten-path techniques like the Locrian Mode and Octave jumping.

QRD A treasure trove of gear-oriented interviews with an international cast of lesser known modern guitarists. Check out Brian Silber’s label for amazing modern guitar music from all over the world

Guitar Pick Zone The importance of the lowly pick is an under-appreciated factor in your sound. if you want to delve deep, this might help.

A couple of great looping sites:

Live Looping

And the grandaddy

Loopers Delight

Effects Manufacturers

Source Audio: THE most forward looking effects company around.

Dwarfcraft Pedals: Not your standard Tube Screamer clones. Plenty of joyous noise on tap and the most entertaining demo videos around .

Infanem Pedals Infanem’s intent is not only to keep it analog but to re-explore the value of kinematics in musical creation and processing. In addition to analog effects, future projects are likely to include tonewheel synthesizers, magnetic echo units, and beyond.

Paul Trombetta Design Used by David Torn and yours truly among others, Trombetta makes solidly contructed effects suitable for everything from classic rock to electronic madness.

Ohnoho Specializes in cool stutter pedals that feed back an effect 9you provide) into itself.

Earthquaker Devices Great sounding, well built, reasonably priced pedals from standard fuzz to devices that will challenge you creatively.

Red Panda The Particle is the modern guitarists dream device. Stay tuned for more pedals from the Panda

  1. Hi, while following Lau Nau on FB, I read about a finnish contemporary guitar quartet (Sähkökitarakvartetti) she wrote for , you may be interested in those guys, sounds quite unusual especially the 2nd piece. they put it on usual streaming platforms, alas no bandcamp apparently

  2. Dear Guitar Moderne,
I saw your Youtube video on Peter Parcek. I knew Peter well in 1969 (he lived in my street – Dukes Avenue, Muswell Hill, London – at the time). We played together in those days with Stan Cross (whom he mentions in the video). Also in the video he mentions Gary & Jeff Green – Gary (Gentle Giant), attended my Muswell Hill, London Tollington Grammar School – and is/was a close friend also. Sadly, Stan died a few years back. I still have Peter’s letters to me, written from USA after his trip to England. I play D-Bass now (heroine is Miss E. Spalding from Berklee). Please ask Peter (or you?) to get in touch? 3. Hi Michael – thought you might be interested in checking out/ reviewing the Industrialectric 4046m and DawnerPrince “boonar” delay. I’m not affiliated with either company, so I’m not “plugging” their wares – just acquired the pedals myself, think they’re inspiring, and figured they may be of interest…. Cheers! – paul

  4. Appreciating the persistence you put into your blog and
in depth information you offer. It’s nice
to come across a blog every once in a while that isn’t the same
old rehashed information. Wonderful read! I’ve saved your
site and I’m including your RSS feeds to my Google account.
