Guitar Moderne Record Picks III

Record Picks is a periodic offering from Guitar Moderne: a listing of recordings brought to my attention that I feel are momentous enough to bring to yours. These are not reviews. Feel free to submit recordings, but they must be purchasable worldwide, reflective of modern guitar (again subjective, but no blues, classic rock, country, etc.) and on a par with the ones below to rate a mention. Many of these are available from DMG in NYC.

Andy Sheppard Quartet Surrounded By Sea [ECM]

Sheppard’s current trio with Michel Benita, and the amazing Seb Rochford is augmented by Eivind Aarset on this gorgeous record.

Anthony Pirog Palo Colorado Dream [Cuneiform]

And interview will happen. Until then don’t miss Pirog’s fabulous new record with Michael Formanek and Ches Smith that builds on the lessons of Frisell and takes them to new heights.

Totem Voices of Grain [New Atlantis Records]

Guitarist Bruce Eisenbeil joins forces with double bassist Tom Blancarte and drummer Andrew Drury to present a textbook version of how the most aggressive sound exploration and free improvisation can result in real music.

Hu Vibrational The Epic Botanical Beat Suite [M.O.D. Technologies]

Eivind Aarset contributes subtle textures to this album that mixes percussive African rhythms and Afro-jazz with elements of hip-hop and electronica. Recorded and mixed at Bill Laswell’s studio, Laswell contributes some bass as well. Echoes of Jon Hassell can be heard in this ancient future mix.

The Scrambling Ex  [FMR Records]

The Scrambling Ex thescramblingex.wordpress.com or TSX  is a collaborative trio, featuring guitarist Andreas Willers, drummer Oliver Steidle (Soko Steidle, Der Rote Bereich, Klima Kalima), and Canadian saxophonist Peter Van Huffel (Gorilla Mask, House of Mirrors, Boom Crane) create a modern trio sound that radiates their joy in creating boundry free music.
